We spoke to the team behind American Vintage.

How did American Vintage come about?

“American Vintage was founded in Marseille in 2006 by Michaël Azoulay. During a trip through America, he was inspired to launch the brand — hence the name American Vintage. Last year, we celebrated our 20th anniversary. In that time, we’ve grown enormously, both in terms of continents and collections. We now produce collections for women, men and children and cater to almost every age group, which makes the brand very accessible and versatile.”

What is at the heart of the brand? What do you stand for?

“Our mission is to create timeless, comfortable and high-quality clothing that people can wear every day and use to express their own style. Our vision is to make fashion more sustainable and authentic by focusing on timeless clothing rather than fast fashion.”

Where do you draw your inspiration from when designing collections?

“Founder Michaël Azoulay and his team draw their inspiration mainly from real people and the way they wear clothes in everyday life. You can see that spontaneity and authenticity reflected in our collections.”

How would you describe the American Vintage signature?

“Timeless, casual, minimalist, colourful, natural, modern and everyday. These are garments that fit effortlessly into any wardrobe.”

Are there any items in the collection that you consider absolutely essential?

“An all-time favourite outfit consists of a lovely woollen cardigan, the VITO19, paired with a good T-shirt, the FIZ02A, and a pair of jeans, the SNOP11B. These styles have been part of our collections for years and remain timeless and beautiful — and therefore sustainable too.”

How can customers best style your items?

“Invest in a few good basics, such as T-shirts, a cardigan and a pair of jeans. These form the foundation of your wardrobe and can be styled with other pieces for years to come.”

What can we expect from American Vintage in the coming years?

“We’re focusing more and more on sustainability, and that will only increase in the future. We also want to expand the brand further into Asian markets and the United States.”
